I Love Crocs And I Don’t Care Who Knows It

My name is Heather and I love Crocs. I know, I know, a controversial opinion, EVEN THOUGH celebrities and influencers wear them, even though designers have sent them down the runway, even though Crocs reports billions in revenue. Even though for years fashion media and fashion adjacent media have been heralding Crocs as “in”, I am still constantly defending my shoes.

For instance; I work in fashion (well I work for a mens big and tall clothing company, so kinda in fashion) and at a recent meeting I casually mentioned my love of Crocs and you would have thought I casually mentioned my love of eating babies. This is just an example, I don’t actually love eating babies, never eaten a baby, never will. Ok back to the story, the meeting pretty much erupted. Everyone was pretty A) vocal about the hatred of my beloved clogs, B) shocked to hear I love them.

Why are they so controversial? “Ugly shoes” have been part of the fashion landscape for ages. Birkenstocks, lug sole boots, Danskos, Uggs, dad sneakers, Yeezys; there are enough ugly shoes to go around, but the most venomous ire seems to be reserved for Crocs. And honestly I don’t get it. Psychologists have theorized that people who wear “ugly shoes” can be seen as risk-takers, which would make them seem exciting and fun. Where is my respect? If my footwear choices make people see me as exciting and fun, why do so many people recoil at my beloved Crocs? I don’t know but that’s their problem, not mine. Viva la Crocs!
