The More You Know, 5 Essential Health Screenings for Women Over 40

November 7, 2024Heather

Let’s talk about essential health screenings for women over 40…

As we age, it gets more and more important to prioritize our health. Thus I’m here to give you the lowdown on what screenings every woman over 40 needs to stay on top of. And I know, health screenings aren’t the most exciting topic, but trust me, it’s worth a few minutes of your time…so let’s get it over with!

  • Mammogram: Okay, let’s get the big one out of the way. Mammograms are like breast check-ups, but squishier. Mammograms are vital for catching any potential issues early.
  • Pap Smear: Ahhhh, a classic, and not to be confused with Pat Smear of the Foo Fighters. Quick and painless, though uncomfortable and awkward, we hate it but we gotta do it.
  • Bone Density Scan: As we age, our bones can get a little fragile. A bone density scan can help determine if you’re at risk for osteoporosis…and if you should be looking into some “I’ve fallen and I can’t get up” jewelry.
  • Colonoscopy: I’m not even going to pretend this one sounds fun, but everyone says the prep is worse than the procedure, so there’s that? A colonoscopy can detect cancer, polyps, inflammation, ulcers, and all sorts of digestive issues. Godspeed my fellow tummy ache girlies.
  • Cholesterol Check: High cholesterol can be a sneaky little bitch. Luckily all you need is a simple blood test to keep tabs on your cholesterol levels. I recently learned my are “perfect”, which came as a very pleasant surprise!

Now remember, you should always listen to your doctor, not some idiot on the world wide web (it’s me, I’m the idiot). But you should also advocate for yourself! Find a doctor you trust, who listens to your concerns, and makes you feel better, not worse. Ugh, being a woman is hard.

Oh and have these screenings before RFK Jr gets his grubby mitts on public health!
