What To Watch Right Now
Let’s talk about what to watch right now…
A friend reached out on Instagram asking me what to watch when “it’s a dumpster fire out there”, and if there was ever an assignment I was made for; it’s this. Like I’m not a lot of help in a lot of situations, but shows? Shows I know…to paraphrase Carrie Bradshaw. I shared my recommendations and thought “maybe someone else is looking for shows to distract them from the dumpster fire?” So here we go! Fresh from the oven, some shows for those of us who could use a little television assisted escapism.
Grace And Frankie
Grace And Frankie is the PERFECT place to start. I love shows about friendship, and shows about sassy old broads, so Grace And Frankie hits the sweet spot. This might sound a little bonkers, but watching a show lead by women north of menopause, about strong women who refuse to slink into the shadows, women who take up BIG space, who use what could have been a devastating betrayal to propel themselves into a vibrant second act; makes me feel empowered and ready to run through a wall…in a good way. And Jane Fonda and Lilly Tomlin are literal queens.
Detroiters
Another great comedy about friendship! Yes, this one is about male friendship, but I have no worries about who my boys Sam and Tim voted for. Sam Richardson and Tim Robinson created and starred in this comedy about two best friends running an ad agency. They’re also best friends in real life and you can actually feel how much they love each other. Their fictional and real life friendships warm my cold black heart, and I can admit I cried when they both won Emmys (for different projects) last year and thanked each other in their speeches. My wish for all of us is to have such a pure friendship.
The Terror
If you’re looking for a show to completely disappear into, my pick is The Terror. The Terror tells the (fictionalized, OR IS IT) story of the ill-fated 1845 expedition to find the Northwest Passage. These poor unfortunate souls go on to get stuck in the ice for three years. Yes, three years. I won’t even go on a harbor cruise because I’m worried about possibly getting stuck for an hour, but THREE YEARS!? As you can imagine, things out on the ice get a little dicey. The Terror is an excellent distraction.
Fargo S2
For my money, Fargo Season 2 is the single greatest season of television…Season 5 is nothing to sneeze at either by the way. This show has everything. Crime family wars, beauty school, Zahn McClarnon, hit and runs, Ted Danson (Stefon voice). And the cherry on top? This season takes place in the 70s, so the wardrobe is *chefs kiss*.
Golden Girls
You can never go wrong with this classic. It’s amazing a show written almost forty years ago has held up so well. A testament to how good the writing is! Golden Girls ran for seven seasons; so throw it on, go about your day, and maybe find a moment or two of joy. And while I’m at it, justice for Golden Palace.
Do you have a comfort show? Or a show we could get lost in? Let us know!
