Self-Care Rituals, Your New Wellness Secret Weapon
Let’s talk about self-care rituals…
Listen, if you’ve made it to your 40s you’re a busy gal. You’ve got your family, work, friends, and probably more responsibilities than I have space to write them; I get it. And with all that going on, it’s really easy to put ourselves at the bottom of the list. I hate to bust out an old cliche (no I don’t), but you can’t pour from an empty cup. Self-care is essential for our physical and mental wellbeing, so let’s get a self-care ritual already!
I know that “self-care” has become kind of a buzzword, or even a cliche, but first and foremost self-care is about giving ourselves the time and attention we deserve, and even need. As women we so often prioritize others over ourselves, but that ends today (obviously still prioritize your children, but those jokers in your office can fend for themselves). And in the end, by taking care of ourselves, we can show up better for others.
Self-care rituals can take many forms, but the goal is always the same; to nourish our bodies and minds. Self-care for one person may be daily meditation, for another a weekly hike, for another a monthly massage. You see what I’m getting at? A self-care ritual should be something that feels enjoyable and rejuvenating, so figure out what that looks like for you and make the time to do it.
One of the biggest benefits of having a self-care ritual is stress management. When we take time to relax and recharge, we’re better able to manage our stress levels, which in turn has a positive impact on many different aspects of our lives. Studies have shown that those who practice regular, intentional self-care have reduced stress and anxiety, and improved self-esteem, physical health, and relationships. It’s all connected people!
Let’s touch on self-esteem for a minute. I’m not super proud of it, but I have really struggled with self-esteem since I was a pre-teen, and I can honestly say that regular self-care has helped in that battle. When we take care of ourselves, we send the messages to ourselves that we’re worth time and effort. And when we have high self-esteem the world is our oyster! It’s like I’m ticking myself and I am alarmingly easy to trick.
The bottom line is practicing self-care can help us feel more connected to ourselves. We all get caught up in the daily grind and can lose touch with our own needs. A regular, intentional self-care ritual can help us stay in tune with ourselves; reminding us what’s truly important and bring a sense of clarity to our lives. A self-care ritual should be an essential part of any woman’s life, but it’s especially important for those of us over forty. We NEED to take the time to reduce stress, boost self-esteem, improve our physical health, and feel more connected to ourselves. So whatever self-care ritual is right for you, make it a non-negotiable part of your schedule; you deserve it!
