Regular Exercise Over 40, Everything You Need To Know
Let’s talk about exercise over 40…
Regular exercise is important for everyone, regardless of age or gender, but it’s extra super important for us women over 40. As we age, our bodies go through various bummer changes such as decreases in muscle mass, bone density, and hormone levels, fun! Regular exercise can help counteract these changes and promote overall health and well-being.
One of the most important benefits of regular exercise for women over 40 is that it can help maintain and even improve our bone density. As we age, we’re at an increased risk osteoporosis, a condition in which the bone become weak and brittle, not great! Exercise, especially weight-bearing exercises such as walking, jogging, and weightlifting, can help prevent or slow down the loss of bone density. Go down, swinging babe!
I don’t want to make this about weight, and I don’t think we should be focusing on weight, BUT if you are looking to lose weight, maintain weight, whatever; we gotta exercise. As we age our metabolism slows down, making it easier to gain weight, and honestly that’s ok! I’ve gained weight, and I’m still healthy and cute as hell! But regular exercise can help increase our metabolisms and burn more calories, if that’s your thing.
Exercise can also help us women of a certain age reduce our risk of heart disease, diabetes, and certain types of cancer. Regular exercise can improve our cardiovascular health, lower blood pressure and cholesterol, and improve our insulin sensitivity; all things that can help reduce the risk of diseases…and that’s way more important than fitting into a certain size jeans.
And the benefits of exercise aren’t just physical; regular exercise can have a positive impact on mental health. Regular exercise can reduce stress, anxiety, and depression, and can improve cognitive function and overall mood. Not to sound corny, but I recently got back into a real workout routine and my headspace is so much better. I’m pretty sure it’s the exercise and not rewatching Vanderpump Rules from the beginning but I’m going to keep both up just to be sure.
In conclusion and to paraphrase Nike, ladies just do it. Even if you just carve out 20 minutes for yourself a few days a week, you’re worth it.
