Nine Traditional Irish Recipes That Are Perfect For St. Patrick’s Day
I have a confession to make, I hate corned beef. I’m sorry guys, but it’s just so bad. First of all, grey meat? No thank you. And that smell? Maybe I’m weird but I like my food to smell appetizing. And after all that it doesn’t even taste good! Just a boiled hunk of over-salted meat. How did corned beef and cabbage (speaking of stinky) become THE St. Patrick’s Day meal? Why do you all lose your minds for it once a year? And don’t you dare try to tell me it’s good because if it were you would eat it more than once a year. I’m working to expand St. Patrick’s Day cuisine, I’m not scared of the Corned Beef Lobby! Ireland has many dishes that have actual taste and flavor, and won’t make your house smell like a corpse foot for a week, why not make one of them this year?
Irish Brown Bread
This is not the brown bread that comes in a can! Irish brown bread is (allegedly) a good option for people just starting to bake because there’s no yeast, so rising time or any of that junk.
Irish Soda Bread
Though both soda bread and brown bread are both on the dense side, soda bread is a little sweeter, making it a great choice for pairing with tea.
Boxy
Boxty is the Irish version of potato pancakes and though it can be a bit of work oh my God it’s worth it.
Skillet Roasted Lamb Loin
In the interest of full disclosure, I don’t love lamb, but far be it from me to keep the recipe from you.
Cottage Pie
Swimming in beef gravy is my favorite way to eat veggies.
Bangers And Mash
My obsession with gravy is not gluttony, it’s my culture.
Dublin Coddle
Coddle was originally a way to use up the leftovers in your fridge, so feel free to throw in whatever you’ve got!
Smoked Shoulder
This is what my Nana Foley would make for St. Patrick’s Day and though it’s the lesser known of the Irish boiled dinners, in my opinion it’s the best. Make sure you serve with Irish mustard.
Irish Apple Cake With Custard Sauce
I have a rule when it comes to Irish Apple Cake, if you make it you need to give me a big ol’ slice.
Do you have a treasured Irish family recipe? As long as it’s not cored beef I’d love for you to tell me about it!
