Managing Holiday Stress: Easy Tips For Finding Joy And Balance

December 1, 2023Heather

Let’s talk about managing holiday stress…

As Andy Williams sings, it’s the holiday season, so hoop-de-do and dickory dock; and I can only imagine “dickery dock” is some old timey slang for “oh my God I am so stressed out”. Yes the holidays are a magical time of twinkling lights, cozy gatherings, and all around delightful festivities. But let’s get real, alongside all that holiday cheer can be a hefty dose of stress and anxiety. From juggling parties and gift shopping, to managing family dynamics and end of year work responsibilities, it’s easy to feel overwhelmed in December. So how do we keep the joy and balance amidst the chaos? So glad you asked!

Coping With Holiday Stress

  • Prioritize and Plan: It’s the season of giving, so give yourself a break. Your time and energy are precious! Make a list of priorities, whether it’s attending certain events, spending time with loved ones, or dedicating moments for yourself; write it all down. Having a plan can help you feel more control and avoid the frenzy.
  • Set Boundaries: Don’t be afraid to say “no” if something doesn’t align with your mental health or schedule. It’s ok to decline an invitation or delegate some holiday tasks. Your well-being matters.
  • Manage Expectations: Perfectly imperfect is going to be our mantra this holiday. Sometimes the best moments come from the unplanned, imperfect, and real experiences. Embrace the beauty in imperfection.

Managing Holiday Anxiety

  • Practice Mindfulness: Take a breather amidst the chaos. Mindfulness techniques like deep breathing, meditation, or yoga can work wonders. Even just a few minutes a day can help center your thoughts and ease anxiety.
  • Gratitude Journaling: Make time in the hustle and bustle to appreciate the little things. Start a gratitude journal and jot down things you’re thankful for. It doesn’t need to be anything earth shattering, it could be a festive coffee, a heartfelt conversation, or even a cozy blanket.
  • Embrace the Impermanence: Remember the holiday season is only temporary. If things don’t go as planned, it’s okay. Embrace the flow and let go of unrealistic expectations, tomorrow is a new day!

Finding Balance

  • Self-Care Rituals: Treat yourself! Take warm baths, indulge in your favorite book, savor that piece of chocolate! Small acts of self-care can recharge you during this busy time of year.
  • Connect and Share: Surround yourself with supportive people. At this stage in our lives we have no time for jerks! Make time with people with who you can share your feelings, laugh, and create memories. Connection is a powerful stress reliever.
  • Get Moving: Don’t forget to move your body! Whether it’s a brisk walk, dancing to your Spotify yearly wrap up (mine is straight fire), or trying a new workout class; physical activity can boost your mood and reduce stress.

Remember, above all else the holiday season is about joy, love, and connection. By implementing these strategies and embracing a mindful approach you can navigate through the holiday stress and create meaningful memories that truly matter. Take a moment each day to breath, appreciate, and find delight in the simple joys around you.
