Help Me I’m In A Style Rut
Hello my name is Heather and I’m a stylist who is in a style rut. Yes, that’s my real day job. Just like Rachel Zoe, Brad Goreski, and Maeve Riley, except nothing like that at all. I work in studio for a men’s big and tall clothing company, and though I love my job, it’s a far cry from the glamour of red carpet dresses. On any given day I can be crawling around a set to hem a pair of pants or work on a GIANT stills shot, moving props, cleaning, leaning, crouching, squatting, and God knows what else. Because of the weirdly physical and potentially dirty nature of my work, I often dress like I’m off to paint a house. And I hate it.
Almost every day I wear some variation of jeans and a t-shirt, I feel like a slob and it’s BORING. When I worked a more traditional office job, I hated my job but loved my outfits; now that I actually work in fashion I love my job but hate my outfits, go figure! I’m in a style rut and I need out.
For most of us, the past year has been very Groundhog Day, but without the charms of Bill Murray and Andie MacDowell. Whatever you’ve done this past year, work from home, work in the office, or lost a job, every day has probably felt a little of the same, and that sucks. We’ve had no control over a lot, but we do have control over what we wear.
We all deserve to wear outfits that bring us joy. We deserve to love our wardrobe and our personal style. I dress for myself. I feel better when I’m well-dressed, and since I’ve been dressing like a modern retelling of Dennis the Menace, of course I don’t feel great! So for the month of April I’m challenging myself to dress for joy, I would love to jump for joy but jumping is a young woman’s game. To keep myself honest I’ll be sharing daily outfits, or “fits” as the kids say, on Instagram, so follow We Women Of A Certain Age if you’re not already, and I’ll write weekly (we’ll see) updates here on the website. I’ll also be sharing some outfit inspiration every Sunday to help plan our upcoming week. I help you come along for the ride, and dress joyfully for yourself!

It’s so easy to fall into that style rut! For me, with working from home the past year, I thought for sure that I would, so I created an outfits instagram (just followed you — fashionableauthor) specifically to make sure I did dress up daily for the gazillion zoom meetings. Plus, I’ve found that I’m far more productive when I’m dressed up instead of dressing down.

[…] wear, but I think we also need to take a good, hard look at the stuff we wear all the time. Busting out of my style rut is more than just switching up my jeans and t-shirts, it’s branching out and trying more […]
