Everything You Need To Know Before You Take A Cold Plunge
Have you heard? The cool kids are all about the cold plunge…so bundle up, I mean buckle up.
You know what I love? A wellness trend. Weighted hula hoops, nixing sugar, intermittent fasting, fascia blasting, bone broth, superfoods, biohacking, nut milks, hot girl walks; I’ve never met a wellness trend I didn’t like…well I feel like cupping would be murder on my skin, but that’s besides the point. Cold plunges are currently all the rage, so lets get down to the nitty gritty.
What Is A Cold Plunge
You strip down to your bathing suit or skivvies and quickly take a dip in some water that’s cold enough to form icicles to form on your nips. That’s a cold plunge, and doesn’t it sound fun! It can be the ocean, it can be a special tub in a spa or wellness studio, or it can even be your bathtub or shower. As long as you’re spending a little time in some seriously cold water, it’s a cold plunge.
How To Take A Cold Plunge
Now before you just run willy-nilly into some frigid water, let’s talk about safety. You’ll want to start slow, maybe with a cold finish shower, which is just ending your normal, regular ol’ shower on cold. Once you’ve master the cold finish shower, you can graduate to full on cold plunging. And remember, always check with your doctor!
Benefits And Risks
Yeah, there are some pretty cool benefits to cold plunging (sorry, I had to). It can increase your circulation, boost your mood, fill you with a feeling of invigoration, and may even ease menopause symptoms. And honestly, if any effects are just placebo effects, I’m fine with that! Like anything thing else there are a few risks, like shock to the system and potential overexertion, so I’m going to say again, check with your doctor.
Whatever you’re looking to get out of your wellness routine, cold plunging is worth considering, especially this time of year. Whether you take the plunge at a relaxing spa or jump in the ocean, cold plunging can be a rejuvenating addition to your current self-care roster. Just make sure you’ve got a nice warm sweatshirt and puffer for after!
If you live in the Boston area I recommend checking out Nourish Lounge for their cold plunge tank.
