Anti-Aging Foods For Your Best Skin After 40
Let’s talk about anti-aging foods…
This isn’t your typical skincare post, today we’re talking about skincare from the inside out. We’ve all heard you are what you eat, and that includes your face (this sounds a little more Hannibal Lectory than I mean it, but you get the gist). Your kitchen is a veritable goldmine of anti-aging foods and ingredients that can help you maintain youthful, radiant skin.
Berries
Berries are packed with antioxidants like vitamin C and E, and antioxidants fight the free radicals that cause premature aging. They help protect your skin from sun damage, reduce wrinkles, and leave your skin with a natural glow. Plus they’re sweet and delicious, one might even say they’re berry good (to paraphrase Berger, I’m sorry, I had to, don’t hate me).
Avocado
Avocados are like nature’s healthier butter. They’re chock-full of monounsaturated fats that keep your skin plump and hydrated. And the healthy fats in avocados also help your body absorb other skin-loving nutrients. So add avocado to any meal you can; spread it on toast, mash it into guacamole, or toss a couple slices on your sandwich or salad.
Citrus
Oranges, grapefruit, lemons – citrus fruits are your secret weapon for a glowing complexion. Citrus fruits are a great source of vitamin C, the MVP of skin health. Vitamin C promotes collagen production, which keeps your skin firm and wrinkle-free. It also helps fade dark spots and even out your skin tone. So add a lemon slice to your water, some grapefruit sections to your salad, or go old school youth soccer and have a couple orange slices.
Fatty Fish: Omega-3 Fatty Acids
Salmon (yes please), mackerel (no thank you), and trout (also no thank you) are more than just fatty fish, they’re your ticket to radiant skin. Fatty fish are packed with omega-3 fatty acids, which help maintain your skin’s natural oil barrier. Omega-3s keep your skin hydrated and reduce inflammation, making it less prone to redness and irritation.
Green Tea
Swap your morning coffee for a soothing cup of green tea…just kidding! I would never suggest anything so silly. BUT, you could swap out one of your many cups of coffee each day for a mug of green tea. Green tea is loaded with antioxidants called catechins, which protect your skin from UV damage. And the anti-inflammatory properties in green tea can also calm irritated skin and reduce redness.
Nuts And Seeds
Almonds, walnuts, flaxseeds, and chia seeds are small but nutritionally mighty. They’re packed with vitamin E, which acts as a shield against UV rays (but still use sunblock) and helps your skin retain moisture. And they’re super easy to eat. You can snack on a handful or sprinkle them on your oatmeal or yogurt, try doing that with mackerel…just kidding, please don’t.
Tomatoes
They’re not just for throwing at bad comics, tomatoes also for healthy skin…and pasta sauce I guess. Tomatoes contain lycopene, which can help protect your skin from sun damage, improve skin texture, and reduce the overall signs of aging. Pro tip, cooked tomatoes release more lycopene, so simmer that Sunday gravy for 30 minutes to get the make the most of it.
