Let’s talk about solo travel…

Who wants to travel more! Me! Me! Ok, now who sometimes struggles with finding people to travel with? Also me! Also me! Getting your friends together for a single solitary night out in your 40s is tough, but it can be downright in possible to get a group together to travel for a few days. Women in their 40s are booked and busy! So what is the answer? Could it be solo travel?

They say you can’t teach an old dog new tricks, so you might be thinking if you’re in your 40s, it’s too late to start solo traveling. Bing-bong you’re wrong. Solo travel can be liberating and empowering, but it can also be a little intimidating. In an effort to counter the intimidating, I’m sharing a few of my solo travel tips, read ’em!

Plan Ahead, But Stay Flexible

As a mature woman of the world, you already know the importance of planning ahead. But babes you also have to stay flexible. The flexible can be where the fun is…it can also be where safety is. Don’t be afraid to change your plans if something isn’t working out or if something great pops up. THIS IS ESPECIALLY TRUE IF YOUR GUT IS TRYING TO TELL YOU SOMETHING. Like if you’re not feeling comfortable in a particular situation don’t stick it out, get out. It’s your trip, you’re the boss.

Safety First

We’ve all watched Dateline, we know we have to put safety first always, but this is especially true when we’re solo traveling. Before you go do your research. Familiarize yourself with the area; local customs, laws, what is accepted and frowned upon. Make sure you know how you’re getting around, especially at night; and always keep your valuable and wits about you.

Pack Light

Personally this is always the toughest for me, I am a lifelong over-packer! But as we get older we may find it more difficult traveling with excessive luggage…or we just don’t want to deal with it. To make your trip more enjoyable from start to finish (including the dreaded unpacking), pack light. Pack clothes, shoes, and accessories that all work together, and leave anything unnecessary at home. Trust me, you’ll be fine if you don’t bring everything.

Connect With Others

Solo travel doesn’t mean you have to be alone the whole time, unless that’s what you want of course. Check out group tours and solo travel meetups! This is a great way to connect with other like-minded people and make new friends. It can reassuring to know there are others around in the same boat as you, and besides, vacation friends just hit different.

Embrace The Adventure

I mean, that’s the point, right? Solo travel is a unique opportunity to explore new places, meet new people, and discover new things about yourself; and you’re not going to do any of that if you just plop in your hotel room and order room service your whole trip. Don’t be afraid to step outside your comfort zone and try new experiences. You might surprise yourself!

Now get outta here!
