Admit It, You’re Not Really Sure What Self-Care Is
“Self-care” has become a very popular phrase over the past few years. We use it to justify everything from cultivating a plant obsession to drinking a bit too much pinot…and everything in between. We’ve become pretty glib (trademark Tom Cruise) with how we throw around the phrase “self-care”, but what is it exactly?
The World Health Organization, or WHO for short (I’m sure theres some sort of “whose on first joke” joke here somewhere but I’m tired) defines self-care as “the ability of individuals, families, and communities to promote health, prevent disease, maintain health, cope with illness, and disability with or without the support of a healthcare provider”. Sounds a little more intense than buy a couple succulents, right?
While many of us jokingly use “self-care” to justify all manner of indulgences, true self-care is neither selfish nor trivial. It’s taking care of your physical and mental well-being so you can best show up for yourself and others. It helps us cope with the everyday stresses of our lives and jobs. With the highs and lows of life. With the physical toll of dragging our rapidly decaying meat suits through another day on this hellscape. Ok that last one might just be me.
When we take the physical and mental care we need, we set the stage for being the best possible versions of ourselves.
