I Was Wrong About Capsule Wardrobes
For what seems like years Pinterest has been pushing capsule wardrobes on me. My feed is littered with travel capsule wardrobes, seasonal capsule wardrobes, work capsule wardrobes, and all I could think was “boring, no thanks”. A wardrobe full of nothing but neutral pieces? Couldn’t be me! I need color, I need texture, I need pattern, I need shine! I thought capsule wardrobes were the opposite of everything I love, and I was a little bit wrong.
Yup, I’ve been looking at capsule wardrobes all wrong. They aren’t the antithesis of a bold, fun, colorful wardrobe, they are the foundation. Think of a house, sure bold wallpaper or a bright paint color is fun, but you need walls behind the decor! Neutral basic pieces of a capsule wardrobe make my bolder pieces more wearable and extends the life and reach of statement makers. My sequin robe for example; over jeans and white t-shirt it’s downright casual, while over a black mini dress its va-va-voom.
Having a capsule wardrobe of neutral tops and bottoms doesn’t mean I’m quitting my fun clothes. Half my closet is still sequin and animal print, I just have a core of strong basic pieces that I can use of show off the pieces that better express my personal style.
