Honest Review: Free People Hot Shot Onesie

I’ve had Free People’s Hot Shot Onesie in various online shopping carts for AGES. I was hesitant to pull the trigger, $70-$80 is a lot for me to spend on comfies so I had to examine my options. First I tried two different Amazon “dupes”and they were hot garbage. The fit and sizing were wonky, the material was so bad, and considering what a cheap, inferior product they were, the $30-ish price tag was highway robbery. If you never listen to anything else I say, listen to this, Amazon clothes are cheap trash and any influencer, website, or publication that tells you anything else is just trying to make a commission. There is no way any of these people believe what they’re saying. The two dupes I tried, which came by way of a TikTok influencer, were nowhere near the same fabric/material as Free People. Did they look similar to a Free People Hot Shot Onesie? Sure, similar enough, but there was no softness, no stretch; they fit completely different and on no planet could be considered a “dupe”. Ok, now back to Free People. Next I started searching on Poshmark, and can anyone tell me why there are people on Poshmark selling these jumpsuits and rompers for MORE than they are currently at Free People? Like who is going to pay $125 plus shipping to some stranger on the internet for a jumpsuit they can get at a store for $70 with free shipping and actually be able to return it? Do people do this? But just when I was going to give up on Poshmark, I had an offer accepted, and now I own my very own, first of many, Free People Hot Shot Onesies.

Overview

Free People’s Hot Shot Onesies are part of the FP Movement Hot Shot Collection. This collection aims to elevate rest days (the best days) by suppling lounge-worthy essentials. Free People says this breathable, lightweight, and super soft collection is best for running errands, meditation, and taking it easy. And I, for one, can confirm these clothes are excellent for taking it easy. I had pretty high hopes for my Hot Shot Onesie (because of the price tag) and I’m happy to report the jumpsuit exceeded my expectations.

Material And Quality

Unless you can get your hands on one of the elusive Towel Terry Onesies, both the jumpsuits and rompers are 95% cotton and 5% spandex. This ration makes them incredibly soft and comfortable with just a touch of stretch. For care, the onesies are machine wash cold, and I threw mine in the dryer with no problems.

Fit And Sizing

I realize that this is probably the area that will have the most questions because Free People’s sizing can be WILD. So lets get into it. I’m 5’7.5″ (yup, getting real specific guys), a size ten, and depending on the brand a medium or large (if I want something to be oversized I’ll size up, talking straight fitting right now), I’m pretty evenly proportioned, but my torso is a teeny bit long – which can make jumpsuits tricky. Like most Free People pieces, Hot Shot Onesies run large, but they are supposed to be oversized. I went with a medium, it’s oversized but I like the fit of it. If you are between sizes I’d size down, but other than that, I think the fit would be a little odd if you sized down in the effort to achieve a more fitted look. I sometimes size down a full size for Free People, but not for these pieces.

Comfort And Style

As far as I’m concerned, the Free People Hot Shot Onesie is the perfect combination of comfort and style. They are beyond comfy, I want to live in them! The Onesies are a racerback style, a slouchy, relaxed fit design with dropped armholes and crotch, and most importantly – pockets. They’re pajama tier comfort, but you still look pretty cute in them.

Price And Value

Yeah these bad boys aren’t cheap…well they aren’t cheap to me, I don’t know how you’ve got it. You can absolutely find less expensive lounge jumpsuits and rompers, Target and Old Navy have great options, but I think if you’ve been wanting a Free People Hot Shot Onesie, you should treat yo self. Think of it in terms of cost per wear; if you wear it once a week for a year, that comes out to $1.35 cost per wear for the year. And since it’s not necessarily a trendy style and the design is very relaxed, you’ll be able to wear this for years to come, even if you lose or gain weight. I think it’s worth it (she typed as she added three more onesies to her shopping cart).

Odds And Ends

If you are super petite or super tall, you may have some length issues. And if you really only love a body-con look, the Free People Hot Shot Onesie is not for you. I get not wanting to shell out $70 for lounging, but I beg you, stay away from the dupes. Keep an eye on eBay and Poshmark, and make sure you’re buying from a legit seller, I came across a lot of inferior knockoffs and dupes on eBay. Feel free to reach out with any questions!
